Most business owners are sitting on a goldmine of untapped traffic and they don’t even realise it. Instead of creating endless new blog posts and product pages, the quickest way to grow is often by optimising what you already have.

Here’s the surprising part: many websites already rank on page 2 of Google for dozens of keywords. With just a few smart adjustments, those positions can move to page 1, where the real traffic lives.

Why does this matter? The difference between ranking at position 10 and ranking at position 3 can mean 10x more clicks. Position 10 typically sees around 2–3% of search traffic, while position 3 can pull in 20–30%. That’s a massive difference without publishing a single new article.

At FatFinger, this is one of our favourite techniques for clients because it works. Here’s how you can use it yourself.

Step 1: Find Your Low-Hanging Fruit

Open Google Search Console and filter your pages by average position 11–20. These are keywords sitting just off page 1.

It’s much easier to move from position 15 to 5 than it is to rank a brand-new piece of content. You’re already in Google’s good books; you just need to show why you deserve a higher spot.

👉 No Search Console data yet? Tools like Ubersuggest or Ahrefs let you spy on competitor keywords in this range too.

Step 2: Cluster Related Keywords

A single keyword won’t cut it anymore. Instead, create keyword clusters around your main phrase.

For example, instead of only optimising for best coffee maker, also target related searches like:

  • top coffee machines

  • coffee maker reviews

  • best value coffee maker

Each keyword may only bring 50–100 searches a month, but together they can drive 1,000+.

Step 3: Apply the “Three Kings” Rule

Your primary keyword should always appear in three critical spots:

  1. Title tag

  2. H1 heading

  3. First sentence or paragraph

This makes it immediately clear to Google (and your readers) what the page is about. Then, weave in variations of your cluster keywords naturally throughout subheadings (H2–H4) and the body content.

Step 4: Optimise URLs and On-Page Details

Keep URLs short and keyword-rich:

mysite.com/blog-post-47

mysite.com/best-coffee-maker

Update meta descriptions to boost click-through rates, and always add alt text to your images.

Tip: don’t change URLs of older, established pages unless you can set up proper 301 redirects.

Step 5: Outperform the Competition

Search your main keyword in Google. Open the top three results. Now ask yourself:

  • Is the information outdated?

  • Could the formatting be clearer?

  • Are they missing images, data, or FAQs?

Then make your page objectively better: add extra tips, embed visuals, bring in up-to-date stats, and answer more questions.

Remember, Google rewards comprehensiveness and value.

Step 6: Re-Index and Track Progress

Once you’ve made updates, request indexing in Google Search Console. This prompts Google to re-crawl your page.

Track your progress not only for your main keyword but also for your entire cluster, often you’ll rank for terms you didn’t even target directly.

Step 7: Troubleshoot Stalls

If rankings don’t shift after 4–6 weeks, check:

  • Page speed (slow mobile sites rarely rank well)

  • Internal links (link from other relevant pages on your site)

  • Indexing issues in Search Console

  • Backlinks (sometimes one or two high-quality links make all the difference)

Step 9: Keep Updating

SEO isn’t a one-and-done job. Google loves fresh, relevant content. Set a quarterly review cycle to refresh older pages, add new stats, and expand FAQs.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to publish 20 new blog posts this month to see growth. By focusing on the content that’s already ranking just outside of page 1, you can unlock a flood of free traffic in under 90 days.

At FatFinger, we’ve used this exact method to boost client visibility and deliver sustainable, long-term traffic growth. The best part? Anyone can do it.

So — which page are you going to optimise first?
